A dining table and dining chairs are the essential pieces of dining room furniture in any space. The best ways to arrange dining room furniture for an inviting layout all involve accurately measuring your space. We recommend 36” of clearance around all sides of your table, 18-24” of space per place setting, and 24” from the edge of the table to the edge of the rug. These measurements will give your guests plenty of room to enjoy themselves. A dining room doesn’t have to be next to a kitchen, but if it is, here are some ways to design a combined kitchen and dining room for a seamless look: Try using the same materials and colors in both rooms; for example, if you have maple kitchen cabinets, choose a maple dining table, or look at the colors in your kitchen countertops and choose a dining room rug with some of the same colors. Try placing your dining table in alignment with your kitchen island, if applicable, or aligning your furniture in a way that makes it easy to walk from one room to the other.

To maximize space when arranging furniture in a small dining room, choose a round dining table with a lighter color top, get small-scale dining room chairs or a small bench and consider a counter table with one side against a wall. To care for dining room furniture, use coasters and trivets, clean up spills promptly and don’t use abrasive cleaning products. To clean kitchen wood furniture or dining room wood furniture, avoid placing hot or wet items on the wood, which can leave permanent stains. Tossing keys on your furniture or dragging coarse objects across it can also leave marks.

If you have a stationary object on your furniture like a lamp or table runner, move it every so often to promote even wear and color change, since some furniture materials change color over time as they are exposed to humidity and sunlight.
